Pope John Paul II Announces Writer will be Granted a Place in Paradise. |
| His Holiness Pope John Paul II today announced concern about the recent death of Bush biographer J.H. Hatfield. In a comment made outside the Basilica of St. Peter, after saying mass today at 10 AM, His Holiness told reporters, "I met Jim Hatfield in Chicago last month. I thought he was a nice guy. I read his book on Bush. It was quite good....I thought it was fair." |
| Asked about Hatfield's felony conviction, Pope John Paul II quoted Psalm 117. "'The stone that the builders rejected shall be my cornerstone.' This is a foundation of Catholic dogma. Hatfield asked forgiveness for his sins, and asked to let his past be past. It grieves me that he was not able to do this in the United States. Why is Bush's America so unforgiving?" |
| Commenting on his recent meeting with President Bush, His Holiness again quoted scripture, "The greatest of the prophets, Isaiah, says in Isaiah 3:14-15, 'The Lord enters into judgement with his people's elders and princes: It is you who have devoured the vineyard. The loot wrested from the poor is in your houses. What do you mean by crushing my people, and grinding down the poor when they look at you?' |
| "I met Jim Hatfield in Chicago when Fortunate Son was getting reprinted. He shook my hand and gave me a signed copy. I gave him my blessing and told him to go forth and speak the truth. He said, 'I am already doing that, Father.' We had a laugh together. They tell me he's dead now...very tragic. He will be remembered in a series of special masses. I am sure that he is in heaven with our Lord, Jesus Christ, who said, "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you for my sake. Rejoice and be glad for great is your reward in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets who were before you." [Matthew 5:1-2] |
