Protecting
the Nuclear Power Industry from Unlimited Liability:
the Cheney solution to our energy crisis
|
|
Hi,
Dick Cheney here. Today I'd like to go into a little
more detail about one of the president's energy proposals:
limited liability for Nuclear power companies.
The
accident at Chernobyl released 180 tons of radioactive
material into the atmosphere. It killed thousands
of people, forced 400,000 people to leave their homes,
and will cause 475,000 fatal cancers. Today 1.8 million
people still live in "radioactive zones." (more)
Now
think about it: If U.S. Nuclear power companies were afraid
they'd have to pay for an accident like that in America, do
you think they'd risk it? Accidents happen--but unlimited
liability for nuclear disasters would be like giving a death
sentence to the company that caused the disaster.
Wouldn't
that be wrong?
And
more importantly, it would discourage power companies from
building new Nuclear plants. Nobody's perfect, and accidents
happen. But how badly do you want to be able to leave all
the lights on when you leave the house? Sometimes we just
have to accept a little risk to get the things that are really
important to us.
|
|
The
last time America faced an energy crisis, President Jimmy
Carter put solar panels on the White House roof. In that
spirit, we've begun work on first new Nuclear power plant
since 1976--in the White House rose garden.
Building
thousands of new power plants will obviously require
every American community to host a few. This is a small
price to pay for preserving our American right to have an
air conditioner in every window, and a light left on in
every room.
No
doubt, environmentalists will raise their tired, old objections,
and whine that we should be investing in alternative energy
sources. But as everybody knows, alternative energy sources
are for pansies.
